[176] Having abandoned the five hindrances (nīvaraṇa), corruptions of the mind that weaken wisdom, then, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unwholesome states, I entered and dwelt in the first jhāna, which is accompanied by thought and examination, with rapture (pīti) and happiness born of seclusion. With the subsiding of thought and examination, I entered and dwelt in the second jhāna, which has internal confidence and unification of mind, is without thought and without examination, with rapture and happiness born of concentration (samādhi) … the third jhāna … the fourth jhāna.
