[184] Again, bhikkhus, and furthermore, an untrue person is an expert in the Discipline (vinayadhara). He reflects thus: 'I am an expert in the Discipline, but these other bhikkhus are not experts in the Discipline.' On account of that expertise in the Discipline, he exalts himself and disparages others. This too, bhikkhus, is the character of an untrue person.
But a true person, bhikkhus, reflects thus: 'It is not through expertise in the Discipline that states of greed (lobha) come to destruction, or states of hatred (dosa) come to destruction, or states of delusion (moha) come to destruction. Even if one is not an expert in the Discipline, if he is practicing in accordance with the Dhamma, practicing rightly, conducting himself in conformity with the Dhamma, he is worthy of honor therein, he is worthy of praise therein.' Having made the practice itself the essential thing, he neither exalts himself nor disparages others on account of that expertise in the Discipline. This too, bhikkhus, is the character of a true person.
