[185] Furthermore, bhikkhus, an untrue person is a teacher of the Dhamma (dhammakathika). He reflects thus: 'I am a teacher of the Dhamma, but these other bhikkhus are not teachers of the Dhamma.' On account of that state of being a teacher of the Dhamma, he exalts himself and disparages others. This too, bhikkhus, is a quality of an untrue person.
But a true person, bhikkhus, reflects thus: 'It is not on account of being a teacher of the Dhamma that states of greed (lobha) come to destruction, or that states of hatred (dosa) come to destruction, or that states of delusion (moha) come to destruction. Even if one is not a teacher of the Dhamma, yet if he is one practicing in accordance with the Dhamma, practicing rightly, conducting himself in conformity with the Dhamma, he is worthy of honor therein, he is worthy of praise therein.' So, making the practice itself the essential thing, he neither exalts himself nor disparages others on account of that state of being a teacher of the Dhamma. This too, bhikkhus, is a quality of a true person.
