[2] The Blessed One said this: "Bhikkhus, there are some ascetics and brahmins who hold such a doctrine, such a view: 'Whatever this individual person experiences—whether pleasant, painful, or neither-painful-nor-pleasant—all that is caused by what was done in the past (pubbe katahetu). Thus, with the eradication of old kammas by austerity (tapa), and with the non-doing of new kammas, there is no inflow (anavassava) in the future; with no inflow in the future, there is the destruction of kamma; with the destruction of kamma, the destruction of suffering (dukkha); with the destruction of suffering, the destruction of feeling (vedanā); with the destruction of feeling, all suffering will be worn away.' Such, bhikkhus, is the doctrine of the Nigaṇṭhas."
