[268] "And what, bhikkhus, is right speech (sammāvācā) that is noble, taintless, supramundane, a factor of the path? Bhikkhus, the desisting, abstaining, abstinence, and refraining (veramaṇī) from the four kinds of verbal misconduct in one whose mind (citta) is noble, whose mind is taintless, who is endowed with the noble path and is developing the noble path — this, bhikkhus, is right speech that is noble, taintless, supramundane, a factor of the path.
He makes an effort to abandon wrong speech and to attain right speech: that effort of his is right effort (sammāvāyāma).
Mindfully he abandons wrong speech, and mindfully he attains and dwells in right speech: that mindfulness of his is right mindfulness (sammāsati).
Thus these three dhammas run and circle around right speech, namely: right view (sammādiṭṭhi), right effort, and right mindfulness."
