[301] Furthermore, bhikkhus, just as if a bhikkhu were to see a corpse discarded in a charnel ground (sivathikā): a skeleton with flesh and blood, held together by sinews … a skeleton, without flesh, smeared with blood, held together by sinews … a skeleton, devoid of flesh and blood, held together by sinews … bones, devoid of connecting sinews, scattered in all directions—the hand-bone in one place, the foot-bone in another, the shin-bone in one place, the thigh-bone in another, the hip-bone in one place, the back-bone in another … the skull in another place. He compares this very body with it: "This body too is of that same nature, it will come to be thus, it has not gone beyond that." As he dwells thus diligent … Thus too, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu develops mindfulness directed to the body (kāyagatā sati).
