[309] "Bhikkhus, suppose there were a dry, sapless log. Then a man might come along, taking an upper fire-stick, thinking: 'I shall kindle a fire; I shall produce the fire element (tejodhātu).' What do you think, bhikkhus—could that man, taking the upper fire-stick and rubbing it against that dry, sapless log, kindle a fire and produce the fire element?"
"Yes, venerable sir."
"Even so, bhikkhus, in whomever mindfulness directed to the body (kāyagatā sati) is undeveloped and uncultivated, Māra gains an opening upon him, Māra gains a foothold (ārammaṇa) upon him."
