[358] Then the Blessed One, having emerged from seclusion in the evening, approached the attendance hall; having approached, he sat down on the seat that had been prepared. Having sat down, the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, for what talk are you sitting together here now? And what was the conversation among you that was left unfinished?"
"Here, venerable sir, after the meal, when we had returned from almsround and were sitting assembled together in the attendance hall, this conversation arose among us: 'It is marvellous, friends, it is amazing (abbhūta)—the great spiritual power and great majesty of the Tathāgata, in that the Tathāgata is able to know of the Buddhas of the past—who have attained final Nibbāna (parinibbuta), who have cut off proliferation (papañca), cut off the course [of the round], exhausted the round, and passed beyond all suffering (dukkha)—thus: "Those Blessed Ones were of such birth"; thus too: "of such name … of such clan … of such virtue … of such qualities … of such wisdom … of such abiding … of such liberation were those Blessed Ones"—thus too.' When this was said, venerable sir, the Venerable Ānanda said this to us: 'Marvellous indeed, friends, are the Tathāgatas and endowed with marvellous qualities; amazing indeed, friends, are the Tathāgatas and endowed with amazing qualities.' This, venerable sir, was our conversation in between that was left unfinished; and then the Blessed One arrived."
