[422] "Householder, the limitless liberation of mind (appamāṇā cetovimutti) and the exalted liberation of mind (mahaggatā cetovimutti) — these things are different both in meaning and in phrasing. And, householder, it should be understood by the following method how these things are different both in meaning and in phrasing.
And what, householder, is the limitless liberation of mind? Here, householder, a **bhikkhu** dwells pervading one direction with a mind imbued with **loving-kindness** (mettā), likewise the second, likewise the third, likewise the fourth; so too above, below, across, everywhere, to all as to himself, he dwells pervading the entire world with a mind imbued with loving-kindness — abundant, exalted, measureless, without enmity, without affliction. With a mind imbued with **compassion** (karuṇā) … with a mind imbued with **altruistic joy** (muditā) … he dwells pervading one direction with a mind imbued with **equanimity** (upekkhā), likewise the second, likewise the third, likewise the fourth; so too above, below, across, everywhere, to all as to himself, he dwells pervading the entire world with a mind imbued with equanimity — abundant, exalted, measureless, without enmity, without affliction. This, householder, is called the limitless liberation of mind."
