[43] "Bhikkhus, so it seems you do not think of me thus: 'The ascetic Gotama teaches the Dhamma for the sake of robes, or the ascetic Gotama teaches the Dhamma for the sake of almsfood, or the ascetic Gotama teaches the Dhamma for the sake of lodgings, or, in such fashion (iti), the ascetic Gotama teaches the Dhamma for the sake of this or that state of existence (bhavābhava).' Then what, bhikkhus, do you think of me?"
"Venerable sir, we think of the Blessed One thus: 'The Blessed One is sympathetic (anukampako), a seeker of welfare (hitesī); it is out of sympathy that he teaches the Dhamma.'"
