[447] "Here, venerable sir, it occurs to me thus: 'It is a gain for me, it is well gained by me indeed, that I dwell together with companions in the holy life (sabrahmacārī) such as these.' Venerable sir, I maintain bodily acts of loving-kindness (mettā) toward these venerable ones, both openly and in private; I maintain verbal acts of loving-kindness toward them, both openly and in private; I maintain mental acts of loving-kindness toward them, both openly and in private. Venerable sir, it occurs to me thus: 'Why should I not set aside my own mind (citta) and proceed according to the mind of these venerable ones?' So indeed, venerable sir, I set aside my own mind and proceed according to the mind of these venerable ones. For though we are different in body, venerable sir, we are, I think, one in mind."
