[450] "Here, venerable sir, whichever of us returns first from the village from the alms round sets out the seats, sets up the drinking water and washing water, and sets up the refuse bowl. Whoever returns last from the village from the alms round — if there is food left over from the meal, if he wishes, he eats it; if he does not wish, he discards it where there is no green growth or drops it into water free of living creatures. He puts away the seats, puts away the drinking water and washing water, washes the refuse bowl and puts it away, and sweeps the refectory. Whoever sees a drinking-water pot, a washing-water pot, or a toilet-water pot empty and void, he sets it up. If it is beyond his strength, he summons a second by a gesture of the hand, and with a joint lifting of hands we set up the drinking-water pot or the washing-water pot; but we do not, venerable sir, break into speech on that account. And every five days, venerable sir, we sit together through the whole night in talk on the Dhamma. It is in this way, venerable sir, that we dwell diligent, ardent (ātāpī), and resolute."
