[466] "So then, Anuruddha, I developed concentration (samādhi) with applied thought (vitakka) and with sustained thought (vicāra); I developed concentration without applied thought but with sustained thought only; I developed concentration without applied thought and without sustained thought; I developed concentration with rapture; I developed concentration without rapture; I developed concentration accompanied by pleasure (sāta); I developed concentration accompanied by equanimity.
"And when, Anuruddha, concentration with applied thought and with sustained thought had been developed by me, when concentration without applied thought but with sustained thought only had been developed, when concentration without applied thought and without sustained thought had been developed, when concentration with rapture had been developed, when concentration without rapture had been developed, when concentration accompanied by pleasure had been developed, and when concentration accompanied by equanimity had been developed, then the knowledge (ñāṇa) and vision arose in me: 'Unshakable is my liberation (vimutti); this is my last birth; now there is no renewed existence.'"
Thus spoke the Blessed One. Satisfied, the Venerable Anuruddha rejoiced in the Blessed One's words.
The Upakkilesa Sutta, the eighth, is finished.
