[465] "So then, Anuruddha, as I was dwelling diligent, ardent (ātāpī), and resolute (pahitatta), I perceived light (obhāsa) that was only limited and saw limited forms (rūpa), and I perceived measureless light and saw measureless forms — even for a whole night, even for a whole day, even for a whole night and day. Then, Anuruddha, it occurred to me: 'What now is the cause, what is the condition, whereby I perceive only limited light and see limited forms, and perceive measureless light and see measureless forms — even for a whole night, even for a whole day, even for a whole night and day?' Then, Anuruddha, it occurred to me: 'At the time when my concentration (samādhi) is limited, at that time my eye is limited; and with the limited eye I perceive only limited light and see limited forms. But at the time when my concentration is measureless, at that time my eye is measureless; and with the measureless eye I perceive measureless light and see measureless forms — even for a whole night, even for a whole day, even for a whole night and day.'
"When, Anuruddha, having understood thus: 'Doubt (vicikicchā) is a corruption (upakkilesa) of the mind (citta),' the corruption of the mind, doubt, was abandoned. Having understood thus: 'Inattention (amanasikāra) is a corruption of the mind,' the corruption of the mind, inattention, was abandoned. Having understood thus: 'Dullness and drowsiness (thīna-middha) is a corruption of the mind,' the corruption of the mind, dullness and drowsiness, was abandoned. Having understood thus: 'Terror (chambhitatta) is a corruption of the mind,' the corruption of the mind, terror, was abandoned. Having understood thus: 'Elation (ubbila) is a corruption of the mind,' the corruption of the mind, elation, was abandoned. Having understood thus: 'Inertia (duṭṭhulla) is a corruption of the mind,' the corruption of the mind, inertia, was abandoned. Having understood thus: 'Excessively aroused energy (accāraddhavīriya) is a corruption of the mind,' the corruption of the mind, excessively aroused energy, was abandoned. Having understood thus: 'Overly slack energy (atilīnavīriya) is a corruption of the mind,' the corruption of the mind, overly slack energy, was abandoned. Having understood thus: 'Longing (abhijappā) is a corruption of the mind,' the corruption of the mind, longing, was abandoned. Having understood thus: 'Perception of diversity (nānattasaññā) is a corruption of the mind,' the corruption of the mind, perception of diversity, was abandoned. Having understood thus: 'Excessive gazing at forms (atinijjhāyitatta rūpānaṃ) is a corruption of the mind,' the corruption of the mind, excessive gazing at forms, was abandoned.
"Then, Anuruddha, it occurred to me: 'Those corruptions of the mind of mine have been abandoned by me. Come now, let me develop concentration in the threefold way.'"
