[464] "Anuruddhas, as I was dwelling diligent, ardent (ātāpī), and resolute, I perceived light (obhāsa) indeed, but did not see forms (rūpa); or I saw forms indeed, but did not perceive light—even for a whole night, even for a whole day, even for a whole night and day. Then, Anuruddhas, this occurred to me: 'What now is the cause, what is the condition, that I perceive light but do not see forms, or see forms but do not perceive light—even for a whole night, even for a whole day, even for a whole night and day?' Then, Anuruddhas, this occurred to me: 'At whatever time I do not attend to the sign of forms (rūpanimitta) but attend to the sign of light (obhāsanimitta), at that time I perceive light indeed but do not see forms. But at whatever time I do not attend to the sign of light but attend to the sign of forms, at that time I see forms indeed but do not perceive light—even for a whole night, even for a whole day, even for a whole night and day.'"
