[480] "Bhikkhus, there are animals (tiracchānagatā pāṇā) that are born in filth, age in filth, and die in filth. And which, bhikkhus, are the animals that are born in filth, age in filth, and die in filth? Those beings, bhikkhus, that are born in a rotten fish, or age in a rotten fish, or die in a rotten fish; or in a rotten corpse … ; or in rotten porridge … ; or in a cesspool … ; or are born in a sump … ; or whatever other animals there may be that are born in filth, age in filth, and die in filth. That very fool, bhikkhus, who formerly here was a devourer of flavors (rasādo), having done evil deeds here, with the breaking up of the body, after death, is reborn in companionship with those beings that are born in filth, age in filth, and die in filth.
Bhikkhus, I could speak of the animal realm (tiracchānayoni) in many ways; so much so, bhikkhus, that it is not easy to convey by description how great is the suffering (dukkha) of the animal realm."
