[493] Furthermore, bhikkhus, the jewel-treasure appears to the wheel-turning monarch. It is a beryl gem, beautiful, radiant, eight-faceted, well cut. And the radiance of that jewel-treasure, bhikkhus, pervades a league all around. It happened once, bhikkhus, that the wheel-turning monarch, wishing to test that very jewel-treasure, marshaled his fourfold army, had the gem hoisted to the top of a banner, and set out in the blinding darkness of the night. Then, bhikkhus, whatever villages there were round about — the people there set about their work by that light, thinking it was day. Such, bhikkhus, is the jewel-treasure that appears to the wheel-turning monarch.
