[517] Bhikkhus, there comes a time when, at some point or other, with the passing of a long stretch of time, the eastern gate of that Great Hell (Mahāniraya) is opened. He runs toward it with swift speed. As he runs with swift speed, his outer skin burns, his inner skin burns, his flesh burns, his sinews burn, and even his bones smoke; yet whatever part is lifted up becomes just as it was before. He gets out through that gate. But immediately adjacent to that Great Hell, bhikkhus, is the vast Dung Hell (Gūthaniraya). He falls into it. In that Dung Hell, bhikkhus, there are needle-mouthed creatures that cut through his outer skin; having cut through the outer skin, they cut through the inner skin; having cut through the inner skin, they cut through the flesh; having cut through the flesh, they cut through the sinews; having cut through the sinews, they cut through the bone; and having cut through the bone, they devour the marrow. There he feels feelings (vedanā) that are painful, racking, and bitter; yet he does not die so long as that evil deed (pāpakamma) is not exhausted.
