[516] Bhikkhus, there comes a time when, at some point or other, after the passing of a long period, the western gate of that Great Hell (mahāniraya) is opened … the northern gate is opened … the southern gate is opened. He runs toward it with swift speed. As he runs with swift speed, his outer skin burns, his inner skin burns, his flesh burns, his sinews burn, and even his bones smoulder; yet whatever is lifted up becomes just as it was before. But when, bhikkhus, he has all but reached it, that gate is shut. There he feels feelings (vedanā) that are painful, racking, and piercing; yet he does not die so long as that evil deed (pāpakamma) is not exhausted.
