[54] "What do you think, Ānanda? Those teachings (dhammā) which I have taught to you from direct knowledge—namely, the four establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna), the four right strivings (sammappadhāna), the four bases of spiritual power (iddhipāda), the five faculties (indriya), the five powers (bala), the seven factors of awakening (bojjhaṅga), and the noble eightfold path—do you see, Ānanda, even two bhikkhus who speak differently regarding these teachings?"
The venerable Ānanda said: "Venerable sir, as to those teachings which the Blessed One has taught to us from direct knowledge—namely, the four establishments of mindfulness, the four right strivings, the four bases of spiritual power, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven factors of awakening, and the noble eightfold path—I do not see even two bhikkhus who speak differently regarding these teachings. But, venerable sir, there are persons who dwell seemingly deferential toward the Blessed One who, when the Blessed One has passed away, might stir up dispute in the Saṅgha concerning livelihood or concerning the Pātimokkha; and such a dispute would be for the harm of the many people, for the unhappiness of the many people, for the loss, harm, and suffering of the multitude, of devas and human beings."
"Trifling, Ānanda, is that dispute—namely, one concerning livelihood or concerning the Pātimokkha. But should a dispute arise in the Saṅgha, Ānanda, concerning the path (magga) or concerning the way of practice (paṭipadā), such a dispute would be for the harm of the many people, for the unhappiness of the many people, for the loss, harm, and suffering of the multitude, of devas and human beings."
