[53] Then the Venerable Ānanda and Cunda the novice (samaṇuddesa) approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, they sat down to one side. Seated to one side, the Venerable Ānanda said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, this novice Cunda says thus: 'Venerable sir, the Nigaṇṭha Nāṭaputta has recently died at Pāvā. With his death the Nigaṇṭhas have split, become divided in two, given to quarrelling, given to strife, fallen into dispute, dwelling wounding one another with verbal daggers: "You do not understand this Dhamma and Discipline (dhammavinaya); I understand this Dhamma and Discipline" … with its shrine broken, without a refuge.' Venerable sir, this occurred to me: 'Let no dispute arise in the Saṅgha after the Blessed One's passing; for such a dispute would be for the harm of many people, for the unhappiness of many people, for the loss, harm, and suffering of gods and humans.'"
