[588] "Here, student, some woman or man is of a jealous mind (issāmanako): with regard to the gains, honor, respect, esteem, reverence, and veneration accorded to others, he is envious, resentful, and harbors envy. Through that deed (kamma), thus accomplished, thus undertaken, with the breaking up of the body, after death, he arises in a state of deprivation, a bad destination, the nether world, hell. But if, with the breaking up of the body, after death, he does not arise in a state of deprivation, a bad destination, the nether world, hell — if he comes to the human state, then wherever he is afterwards reborn, he is of little influence. This, student, is the way of practice (paṭipadā) that leads to being of little influence, namely: one is of a jealous mind — with regard to the gains, honor, respect, esteem, reverence, and veneration accorded to others, one is envious, resentful, and harbors envy."
