[6] When this was said, bhikkhus, those Nigaṇṭhas said this to me: "Friend, the Nigaṇṭha Nāṭaputta is all-knowing and all-seeing; he claims knowledge and vision (ñāṇadassana) without remainder, thus: 'Whether I am walking or standing, asleep or awake, knowledge and vision are continuously and uninterruptedly present to me.' He speaks thus: 'Friends Nigaṇṭhas, there is bad kamma done by you in the past; wear it away by this bitter practice of austerities so hard to perform. And in that you are here and now restrained in body, restrained in speech, and restrained in mind — that is the non-doing of bad kamma for the future. Thus, through the annihilation of old kammas by asceticism (tapa), and through the non-doing of new kammas, there will be no flowing-on in the future; with no flowing-on in the future comes the destruction of kamma; with the destruction of kamma, the destruction of suffering (dukkha); with the destruction of suffering, the destruction of feeling (vedanā); with the destruction of feeling, all suffering will have been worn away.' And that pleases us and is agreeable to us, and because of it we are gratified."
