[7] Bhikkhus, when this was said, I said this to those Nigaṇṭhas: "Friends Nigaṇṭhas, there are these five things that ripen in two different ways in this very life. What five? Faith (saddhā), approval (ruci), oral tradition (anussava), reasoned reflection (ākāraparivitakka), and acceptance of a view after consideration (diṭṭhinijjhānakkhanti). These, friends Nigaṇṭhas, are the five things that ripen in two different ways in this very life. Herein, what faith do the venerable Nigaṇṭhas have in the Teacher concerning the past? What approval, what oral tradition, what reasoned reflection, what acceptance of a view after consideration?" Speaking thus, bhikkhus, I do not see among the Nigaṇṭhas any legitimate defense of their doctrine.
