[8] Bhikkhus, further, I said to those Nigaṇṭhas: "What do you think, friends Nigaṇṭhas? At a time when there is intense exertion (upakkama) on your part, intense striving (padhāna), do you at that time feel painful, racking, sharp feelings (vedanā) born of exertion? But at a time when there is no intense exertion on your part, no intense striving, do you at that time not feel painful, racking, sharp feelings born of exertion?"
"Friend Gotama, at a time when there is intense exertion on our part, intense striving, at that time we feel painful, racking, sharp feelings born of exertion; but at a time when there is no intense exertion on our part, no intense striving, at that time we do not feel painful, racking, sharp feelings born of exertion."
