[644] "And how, friends, is consciousness said to be scattered and diffused externally? Here, friends, when a bhikkhu has seen a form with the eye, and consciousness follows after the sign (nimitta) of the form — tied by greed to gratification in the sign of the form, bound by gratification in the sign of the form, yoked by the fetter (saṃyojana) of gratification in the sign of the form — then consciousness is said to be scattered and diffused externally.
Having heard a sound with the ear … having smelled an odour with the nose … having tasted a flavour with the tongue … having touched a tangible with the body … having cognized a mind-object (dhamma) with the mind, and consciousness follows after the sign of the mind-object — tied by greed to gratification in the sign of the mind-object, bound by gratification in the sign of the mind-object, yoked by the fetter of gratification in the sign of the mind-object — then consciousness is said to be scattered and diffused externally.
Thus, friends, consciousness is said to be scattered and diffused externally."
