[645] "And how, friends, is consciousness (viññāṇa) said to be not scattered and not diffused externally? Here, friends, when a bhikkhu has seen a form with the eye, his consciousness does not follow after the sign of the form, is not tied to gratification (assāda) in the sign of the form, is not shackled by gratification in the sign of the form, is not bound by the fetter of gratification in the sign of the form: consciousness is said to be not scattered and not diffused externally. Having heard a sound with the ear … having smelled an odor with the nose … having tasted a flavor with the tongue … having touched a tangible with the body … having cognized a mind-object with the mind, his consciousness does not follow after the sign of the mind-object, is not tied to gratification in the sign of the mind-object, is not shackled by gratification in the sign of the mind-object, is not bound by the fetter of gratification in the sign of the mind-object: consciousness is said to be not scattered and not diffused externally. Thus indeed, friends, is consciousness said to be not scattered and not diffused externally."
