[663] Bhikkhus, therein, the indulgence in joy of one whose happiness is bound up with sensuality (kāmapaṭisandhi) — low, vulgar, belonging to the common worldling, ignoble, and unconnected with benefit — this is a state (dhamma) beset by suffering (dukkha), beset by harm, beset by despair, beset by fever; it is the wrong way of practice. Therefore this is a state with strife (saraṇa). Therein, bhikkhus, the non-indulgence in the indulgence in joy of one whose happiness is bound up with sensuality — low, vulgar, belonging to the common worldling, ignoble, and unconnected with benefit — this is a state free from suffering, free from harm, free from despair, free from fever; it is the right way of practice. Therefore this is a state free from strife (araṇa).
