[664] Bhikkhus, therein, the pursuit of self-mortification (attakilamathānuyoga)—which is painful, ignoble, and unconnected with benefit—this is a dhamma beset by suffering (dukkha), beset by harm, beset by despair, beset by fever; it is the wrong way of practice. Therefore this dhamma is one with strife (saraṇa). Therein, bhikkhus, the non-pursuit of the pursuit of self-mortification—which is painful, ignoble, and unconnected with benefit—this is a dhamma free of suffering, free of harm, free of despair, free of fever; it is the right way of practice. Therefore this dhamma is one without strife (araṇa).
