[669] Bhikkhus, herein, that sharp speech uttered in a person's presence (sammukhā khīṇavāda) which is untrue, incorrect, and unconnected with benefit — this dhamma is accompanied by suffering (dukkha), accompanied by harm, accompanied by despair, accompanied by fever; it is the wrong way of practice. Therefore this dhamma is beset by strife (saraṇa). Herein, bhikkhus, that sharp speech uttered in a person's presence which is true and correct but unconnected with benefit — this dhamma too is accompanied by suffering, accompanied by harm, accompanied by despair, accompanied by fever; it is the wrong way of practice. Therefore this dhamma is beset by strife. Herein, bhikkhus, that sharp speech uttered in a person's presence which is true, correct, and connected with benefit — this dhamma is free of suffering, free of harm, free of despair, free of fever; it is the right way of practice. Therefore this dhamma is free of strife (araṇa).
