[69] "Sunakkhatta, as to those bhikkhus who declared final knowledge (aññā) in my presence, saying, 'We understand: Birth (jāti) is destroyed, the holy life (brahmacariya) has been lived, what was to be done has been done, there is nothing further for this state of being' — among them there are some bhikkhus who declared final knowledge rightly indeed; but there are also some bhikkhus here who declared final knowledge out of overestimation (adhimāna). Therein, Sunakkhatta, as for those bhikkhus who declared final knowledge rightly, for them it is just so. But as for those bhikkhus who declared final knowledge out of overestimation, therein, Sunakkhatta, it occurs to the Tathāgata: 'I shall teach them the Dhamma.' Thus in this case, Sunakkhatta, it occurs to the Tathāgata: 'I shall teach them the Dhamma.' But then certain foolish men here, having formulated question after question, approach the Tathāgata and ask them. Therein, Sunakkhatta, though it had occurred to the Tathāgata: 'I shall teach them the Dhamma,' that too comes to be otherwise."
"Blessed One, this is the time for that! Sublime One (Sugata), this is the time for that — for the Blessed One to teach the Dhamma. Having heard it from the Blessed One, the bhikkhus will bear it in mind."
"Then, Sunakkhatta, listen and attend well; I will speak."
"Yes, venerable sir," Sunakkhatta the Licchaviputta replied to the Blessed One.
