[68] Sunakkhatta the Licchavi son heard: "Several bhikkhus, it is said, have declared final knowledge (aññā) in the presence of the Blessed One, thus: 'We understand: birth (jāti) is destroyed, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done has been done, there is no more of this state of being.'" Then Sunakkhatta the Licchavi son approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. Seated to one side, Sunakkhatta the Licchavi son said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, I have heard this: 'Several bhikkhus, it is said, have declared final knowledge in the presence of the Blessed One, thus: "We understand: birth is destroyed, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done has been done, there is no more of this state of being."' Venerable sir, as to those bhikkhus who declared final knowledge in the presence of the Blessed One, thus: 'We understand: birth is destroyed, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done has been done, there is no more of this state of being' — did those bhikkhus declare final knowledge rightly, or are there some bhikkhus here who declared final knowledge out of overestimation (adhimāna)?"
