[699] The Blessed One said this: "Bhikkhus, the Tathāgata, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One, has set rolling at Isipatana, in the Deer Park near Bārāṇasī, the unsurpassed Wheel of Dhamma, which cannot be turned back by any ascetic or brahmin or deva or Māra or Brahmā or by anyone in the world — that is to say, the announcing, teaching, making known, establishing, disclosing, analyzing, and elucidating of the four noble truths (ariyasacca). Of which four? The announcing, teaching, making known, establishing, disclosing, analyzing, and elucidating of the noble truth of suffering (dukkha); the announcing, teaching, making known, establishing, disclosing, analyzing, and elucidating of the noble truth of the origin (samudaya) of suffering; the announcing, teaching, making known, establishing, disclosing, analyzing, and elucidating of the noble truth of the cessation (nirodha) of suffering; the announcing, teaching, making known, establishing, disclosing, analyzing, and elucidating of the noble truth of the path (magga) leading to the cessation of suffering. Bhikkhus, the Tathāgata, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One, has set rolling at Isipatana, in the Deer Park near Bārāṇasī, the unsurpassed Wheel of Dhamma, which cannot be turned back by any ascetic or brahmin or deva or Māra or Brahmā or by anyone in the world — that is to say, the announcing, teaching, making known, establishing, disclosing, analyzing, and elucidating of these four noble truths.
"Cultivate, bhikkhus, Sāriputta and Moggallāna; associate, bhikkhus, with Sāriputta and Moggallāna. They are wise bhikkhus who assist their companions in the holy life. Just as one who gives birth, bhikkhus, so is Sāriputta; just as one who rears the child that is born, so is Moggallāna. Sāriputta, bhikkhus, guides beings to the fruit of stream-entry; Moggallāna guides them to the supreme goal. Sāriputta, bhikkhus, is able to announce, teach, make known, establish, disclose, analyze, and elucidate the four noble truths in detail."
Thus spoke the Blessed One. Having said this, the Sublime One (Sugata) rose from his seat and entered his dwelling.
