[719] The Blessed One said this. Having said this, the Sugata, the Teacher, further spoke these verses:
(1) One who is virtuous gives a gift righteously obtained,
with a mind of full confidence,
believing the fruit of kamma to be great,
to the unvirtuous —
that offering (dakkhiṇā) is purified on the part of the giver.
(2) One who is unvirtuous gives a gift unrighteously obtained,
with a mind lacking confidence,
not believing the fruit of kamma to be great,
to the virtuous —
that offering is purified on the part of the recipient.
(3) One who is unvirtuous gives a gift unrighteously obtained,
with a mind lacking confidence,
not believing the fruit of kamma to be great,
to the unvirtuous —
that gift, I declare, is not of abundant fruit.
(4) One who is virtuous gives a gift righteously obtained,
with a mind of full confidence,
believing the fruit of kamma to be great,
to the virtuous —
that gift, I declare, is indeed of abundant fruit.
(5) One free from lust gives a gift righteously obtained,
with a mind of full confidence,
believing the fruit of kamma to be great,
to those free from lust —
that gift, truly, is the foremost among material gifts (āmisadāna).
The Dakkhiṇāvibhaṅga Sutta, the twelfth, is ended.
