[752] Then the Venerable Channa, not long after the Venerable Sāriputta and the Venerable Mahācunda had departed, used the knife. Then the Venerable Sāriputta approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. Seated to one side, the Venerable Sāriputta said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, the Venerable Channa has used the knife. What is his destination (gati)? What is his future state (abhisamparāya)?"
[The Blessed One said:] "Sāriputta, was not his blamelessness (anupavajjatā) declared to you by the bhikkhu Channa in your very presence?"
"Venerable sir, there is a Vajjian village named Pubbajira; there the Venerable Channa had friendly families, intimate families, families to be approached (upavajjakulāni)."
