[764] So it was that the venerable Puṇṇa dwelt in the Sunāparanta country. Then, within that very rains-residence, the venerable Puṇṇa established some five hundred laymen (upāsakas) in the confession of faith; within that very rains-residence he established some five hundred laywomen (upāsikās) in the confession of faith; and within that very rains-residence he realized the three true knowledges (vijjā). Then, at a later time, the venerable Puṇṇa attained final Nibbāna (parinibbāna).
Then a number of bhikkhus approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, they sat down at one side. Seated at one side, those bhikkhus said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, the clansman named Puṇṇa, who was exhorted by the Blessed One with a brief exhortation, has died. What is his destination? What is his future state?"
