[832] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was wandering on tour in the Kosalan country together with a large Saṅgha of bhikkhus, when he arrived at a brahmin village of the Kosalans named Nagaravinda. The brahmin householders of Nagaravinda heard: "The ascetic Gotama, the Sakyan son gone forth from a Sakyan family, wandering on tour in the Kosalan country together with a large Saṅgha of bhikkhus, has arrived at Nagaravinda. Now concerning that Master Gotama such a fair report of fame has spread abroad: 'Thus indeed is that Blessed One: an arahant (arahaṃ), a Perfectly Enlightened One, accomplished in true knowledge (vijjā) and conduct, a Fortunate One (sugata), knower of the world, unsurpassed trainer of persons to be tamed, teacher of devas and humans, enlightened, blessed. Having realized by his own direct knowledge this world with its devas, its Māras, and its Brahmās, this generation with its ascetics and brahmins, its devas and humans, he makes it known to others. He teaches the Dhamma that is good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, with its meaning and its phrasing; he reveals the holy life (brahmacariya) utterly complete and pure.' It is good indeed to see such arahants."
Then the brahmin householders of Nagaravinda approached the Blessed One. Having approached, some paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side; some exchanged greetings with the Blessed One, and when the courteous and memorable talk was concluded, sat down to one side; some raised their joined palms in salutation toward the Blessed One and sat down to one side; some announced their name and clan in the presence of the Blessed One and sat down to one side; some kept silent and sat down to one side.
