[833] When the brahmins and householders of Nagaravinda were seated to one side, the Blessed One said this to them: "Householders, if wanderers of other sects should ask you thus: 'Householders, what kind of ascetics and brahmins should not be honored, not revered, not esteemed, not venerated?' — being asked thus, householders, you should answer those wanderers of other sects thus: 'Those ascetics and brahmins who, with regard to forms cognizable by the eye, are not free of lust (rāga), not free of hatred, not free of delusion, whose minds (citta) are not inwardly stilled, and who conduct themselves now evenly, now unevenly (samavisamaṃ) by body, by speech, and by mind — ascetics and brahmins such as these should not be honored, not revered, not esteemed, not venerated. Why is that? Because we ourselves, with regard to forms cognizable by the eye, are not free of lust, not free of hatred, not free of delusion; our minds are not inwardly stilled, and we conduct ourselves now evenly, now unevenly by body, by speech, and by mind. And since we do not see in those worthy ones any even conduct (samacariyā) superior to our own, therefore those worthy ascetics and brahmins should not be honored, not revered, not esteemed, not venerated.
Those ascetics and brahmins who, with regard to sounds cognizable by the ear … odors cognizable by the nose … tastes cognizable by the tongue … tangibles cognizable by the body … mental phenomena (dhammā) cognizable by the mind, are not free of lust, not free of hatred, not free of delusion, whose minds are not inwardly stilled, and who conduct themselves now evenly, now unevenly by body, by speech, and by mind — ascetics and brahmins such as these should not be honored, not revered, not esteemed, not venerated. Why is that? Because we ourselves, with regard to mental phenomena cognizable by the mind, are not free of lust, not free of hatred, not free of delusion; our minds are not inwardly stilled, and we conduct ourselves now evenly, now unevenly by body, by speech, and by mind. And since we do not see in those worthy ones any even conduct superior to our own, therefore those worthy ascetics and brahmins should not be honored, not revered, not esteemed, not venerated.'
Being asked thus, householders, you should answer those wanderers of other sects in this way."
