[862] "And how, Ānanda, is one a trainee (sekha), one who is practicing (pāṭipada)? Here, Ānanda, when a bhikkhu has seen a form with the eye, there arises the agreeable, there arises the disagreeable, there arises the both agreeable and disagreeable. He is troubled by, ashamed of, and disgusted with that arisen agreeable, that arisen disagreeable, that arisen both agreeable and disagreeable. When he has heard a sound with the ear … when he has smelled an odour with the nose … when he has tasted a flavour with the tongue … when he has touched a tangible with the body … when he has cognized a dhamma with the mind, there arises the agreeable, there arises the disagreeable, there arises the both agreeable and disagreeable. He is troubled by, ashamed of, and disgusted with that arisen agreeable, that arisen disagreeable, that arisen both agreeable and disagreeable. Thus indeed, Ānanda, is one a trainee, one who is practicing."
