[863] And how, Ānanda, is one a noble one with developed faculties (ariyo bhāvitindriyo)? Here, Ānanda, when a bhikkhu has seen a form with the eye, there arises what is agreeable (manāpa), there arises what is disagreeable (amanāpa), there arises what is both agreeable and disagreeable. If he wishes: "May I dwell perceiving the unrepulsive in the repulsive (paṭikkūla)," he dwells perceiving the unrepulsive therein. If he wishes: "May I dwell perceiving the repulsive in the unrepulsive," he dwells perceiving the repulsive therein. If he wishes: "May I dwell perceiving the unrepulsive in both the repulsive and the unrepulsive," he dwells perceiving the unrepulsive therein. If he wishes: "May I dwell perceiving the repulsive in both the unrepulsive and the repulsive," he dwells perceiving the repulsive therein. If he wishes: "Avoiding both the repulsive and the unrepulsive, may I dwell equanimous (upekkhako), with mindfulness (sato) and clear comprehension (sampajāno)," he dwells equanimous therein, mindful and clearly comprehending.
