[100] Then another devatā uttered this inspired utterance (udāna) in the presence of the Blessed One:
"Good indeed, dear sir, is giving (dāna); even when there is but little, giving is good;
giving out of faith (saddhā) too is good; the giving of what is righteously gained is also good;
giving with discernment, too, is good; and further, restraint (saṃyama) towards living beings is good.
One who goes about not harming living beings,
who does no evil (pāpa) from fear of others' reproach—
therein they praise the timid one, not the brave;
for it is out of fear that the good do no evil."
Then another devatā said this to the Blessed One: "Whose [utterance], Blessed One, was well spoken?"
