[223] At Sāvatthī, in the park. … Standing to one side, the young deva (devaputta) Kassapa spoke this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:

"A bhikkhu should be a meditator, one whose mind (citta) is liberated;
let him indeed [1] aspire to the heart's attainment.
Having known the rise and fall of the world,
let him be of lofty mind, independent [2] — having that as his reward."
