[294] Then the young deva (devaputta) Jantu, on that Uposatha day of the fifteenth, approached those bhikkhus; and having approached, he addressed those bhikkhus in verses:
"Happily in the past they lived, the bhikkhus, disciples of Gotama;
without wishes they sought their almsfood, without wishes, their lodging.
Having known impermanence (aniccatā) in the world, they made an end of suffering (dukkha).
But making themselves hard to support, like headmen in a village,
they eat and eat and then lie down, infatuated in the homes of others.
Having made reverential salutation (añjali) to the Saṅgha, I speak here of certain ones:
cast off are they, without a protector; just as the dead (petā), even so are they.
It is with reference to those who dwell negligent that this has been spoken by me;
but as for those who dwell diligent — to them I pay homage."
