[384] "Therefore, great king, you should train yourself thus: 'I will be one who has good friends (kalyāṇamitta), good companions, good comrades.' It is thus, great king, that you should train yourself.
"Great king, as one who has good friends, good companions, good comrades, there is this one thing you should dwell relying upon: diligence (appamāda) in wholesome states (kusalā dhammā).
"When you dwell diligent, great king, relying upon diligence, the women of your court who follow after you will think thus: 'The king dwells diligent, relying upon diligence. Come now, let us too dwell diligent, relying upon diligence.'
"When you dwell diligent, great king, relying upon diligence, the khattiyas who are your vassals too will think thus: 'The king dwells diligent, relying upon diligence. Come now, let us too dwell diligent, relying upon diligence.'
"When you dwell diligent, great king, relying upon diligence, your troops too will think thus: 'The king dwells diligent, relying upon diligence. Come now, let us too dwell diligent, relying upon diligence.'
"When you dwell diligent, great king, relying upon diligence, the townsfolk and the people of the countryside too will think thus: 'The king dwells diligent, relying upon diligence. Come now, let us too dwell diligent, relying upon diligence.'
"When you dwell diligent, great king, relying upon diligence, you yourself will be guarded and protected, the women of your court will be guarded and protected, and your treasury and storehouse will be guarded and protected."
