[391] "So it is, great king! So it is, great king! Once in the past, great king, that financier (seṭṭhi) householder provided a Paccekasambuddha named Tagarasikhī with almsfood (piṇḍapāta). Having said, 'Give almsfood to the ascetic,' he rose from his seat and departed. But having given, he afterwards became regretful: 'It would have been better if slaves or workers had eaten that almsfood.' And moreover, he deprived his brother's only son of life for the sake of his fortune.
"Because, great king, that financier householder provided the Paccekasambuddha Tagarasikhī with almsfood, as the result (vipāka) of that kamma he was reborn seven times in a good destination, in a heavenly world; and as the residual result of that same kamma, he held the position of financier seven times in this very Sāvatthī.
"Because, great king, that financier householder, having given, afterwards became regretful — 'It would have been better if slaves or workers had eaten that almsfood' — as the result of that kamma his mind (citta) did not incline to the enjoyment of excellent food, his mind did not incline to the enjoyment of excellent clothing, his mind did not incline to the enjoyment of excellent vehicles, nor did his mind incline to the enjoyment of the excellent five cords of sensual pleasure.
"And because, great king, that financier householder deprived his brother's only son of life for the sake of his fortune, as the result of that kamma he was cooked in hell (niraya) for many years, for many hundreds of years, for many thousands of years, for many hundreds of thousands of years; and as the residual result of that same kamma, this is the seventh heirless fortune of his that they are depositing into the royal treasury.
"But as for that financier householder, great king, his old merit (puñña) has been exhausted, and new merit has not been accumulated. And today, great king, the financier householder is being cooked in the Mahāroruva hell."
"Then, venerable sir, the financier householder has been reborn in the Mahāroruva hell?"
"Even so, great king: the financier householder has been reborn in the Mahāroruva hell."
