[398] This is what [the Blessed One] said. …
"A poor man, O king, who is without faith (assaddha), stingy,
miserly, of evil intent, of wrong view (micchādiṭṭhi), disrespectful —
ascetics or brahmins, and other wayfaring beggars (vaṇibbaka) too,
he abuses and reviles; he is a nihilist (natthika), a scoffer;
he hinders one who is giving food to those who beg —
such a man, O king, when he dies, O lord of the people,
goes to the terrible hell (niraya): dark, bound for darkness.
A poor man, O king, who has faith (saddhā), free of stinginess,
gives — a man of the highest intent, with unscattered mind;
ascetics or brahmins, and other wayfaring beggars too,
he rises up and salutes; he trains in righteous conduct (samacariyā);
he does not hinder one who is giving food to those who beg —
such a man, O king, when he dies, O lord of the people,
goes to the abode of the triple heaven (tidiva): dark, bound for light.
But if a man is rich, O king, yet without faith, stingy,
miserly, of evil intent, of wrong view, disrespectful —
ascetics or brahmins, and other wayfaring beggars too,
he abuses and reviles; he is a nihilist, a scoffer;
he hinders one who is giving food to those who beg —
such a man, O king, when he dies, O lord of the people,
goes to the terrible hell: bright, bound for darkness.
But if a man is rich, O king, and has faith, free of stinginess,
gives — a man of the highest intent, with unscattered mind;
ascetics or brahmins, and other wayfaring beggars too,
he rises up and salutes; he trains in righteous conduct;
he does not hinder one who is giving food to those who beg —
such a man, O king, when he dies, O lord of the people,
goes to the abode of the triple heaven: bright, bound for light."
