[418] Then the Blessed One, having understood, "This is Māra the Evil One (pāpimant)," addressed Māra the Evil One in verses:

"Having known as unbeneficial whatever other¹ austerity (tapa) there is,
it is all of no avail², like oar and rudder on dry land;
developing virtue (sīla), concentration (samādhi), and wisdom (paññā) — the path (magga) to awakening (bodhi) —
I have attained the supreme purity (suddhi): you are struck down, End-maker (Antaka)!"
Then Māra the Evil One, realizing, "The Blessed One knows me! The Fortunate One (Sugata) knows me!" — pained and dejected, vanished right there.
