[417] Then Māra the Evil One (pāpimā), having known with his own mind the reflection that had arisen in the mind of the Blessed One, approached the Blessed One; and having approached, he addressed the Blessed One in verse: "Having departed from the practice of austerity (tapokamma) by which young men (māṇavā) are purified, being impure, you think yourself pure; you have missed the path of purity (suddhimagga)."
