[440] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Rājagaha, in the Bamboo Grove (Veḷuvana), the Squirrels' Feeding Ground (Kalandakanivāpa).
There the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus!"
"Venerable sir!" those bhikkhus replied to the Blessed One.
The Blessed One said this: "Short, bhikkhus, is this life span of human beings. One must go on to the life to come (samparāya); one should do what is wholesome (kusala), one should live the holy life (brahmacariya). For one who is born there is no avoiding death. One who lives long, bhikkhus, lives a hundred years or a little more."
