[454] "Not out of dullness do I lie down, nor am I intoxicated with poetry;
having attained the goal, I am rid of sorrow.
Alone, in a secluded resting place,
I lie down full of sympathy for all beings.
Even those in whose breast the dart (salla) has entered,
pressing upon the heart moment after moment—
even they, with the dart still lodged, obtain sleep here;
why then should I not sleep, who am free of the dart?
Awake, I am not apprehensive, nor am I afraid to sleep;
the nights and days do not afflict me;
I see no loss anywhere in the world;
therefore I sleep, full of sympathy for all beings."
Then Māra the Evil One (pāpimā), realizing, "The Blessed One knows me; the Sublime One (Sugata) knows me," pained and dejected, vanished right there.
